摘要

A radiation chemical investigation has been performed on cellulose derivatives that are used for charged particle track registration. We report studies of the radiation-induced decomposition of cellulose and cellulose acetate, triacetate, and denigrate during exposure to low LET gamma photons. Among cellulosic films, pure viscose-regenerated clear cellulose film displayed the most extensive radiation damage, with the formation of C02 and carbonyl groups. The material may have promise as a particle track recorder. We identified gaseous products of 7-radiolysis of bulk cellulosic’s as a function of ester groups, oxygen overpressure, presence of scavenger compound, and other parameters, and propose a decomposition mechanism involving dehydrogenation of hydroxyl groups in cellulose and deactivation in cellulose acetates. We suggest some additional experiments which may help to identify processes occurring in actual latent track formation.
