The ratio of the absorption band area, bounded by the envelope of the spectrum and the ordinates of the band edges, gives the magnitude of absorption A in the given band. This method of determining absorption is applicable only in the presence of a recorded absorption spectrum. By using the first method, one can also dispense with a recording of the spectrum, which enables light filters to be used, rather than cumbersome spectral equipment.nWhen the spectroscopic method is used, it must be remembered that the magnitude of absorption depends not only on the amount of water vapor, but also on a series of additional factors;namely, the temperature and pressure of the medium in which the water vapor content is measured, the presence of complexes of water vapor molecules in the medium, and the change in the spectral transparency of the medium due to scattering. According to References 3 and 4, failure to consider the influence of temperature and pressure on the absorption of radiation in the 2-7 μ band leads to an error of about 2 percent in the water vapor content.
