A technique is presented for determining the aerodynamic forces due to arbitrary, time-dependent downwash on flexible wings. The wings must have every edge supersonic and must be subject to linearized aerodynamic theory. The plan forms are divided into a number of discrete areas or boxes, in each of which the downwash is assumed to be uniform. A simplified approach, which nonetheless permits a variety of area shapes within each Mach foregone, is used to give exact expressions for indicial aerodynamic influence coefficients. The Duhamel superposition integral is specialized to employ these coefficients for arbitrary, time-dependent downwash on a box due to transverse gust velocity and/or box motion. These approximate equations would be used if the transverse motion of the centroid of each box were considered to be a degree of freedom in the equations of motion. For the case where the amount of a rigid-body or deformation mode is considered to be a degree of freedom, equations are given which convert the exact indicial aerodynamic influence coefficients to approximate generalized indicial forces. The Duhamel integral is then written to use the generalized indicial forces for generalized forces of arbitrary time dependence. An approximate equation is also given for generalized gust forcing in terms of the indicial aerodynamic influence coefficients.
