摘要

An experimental investigation of the general instability of rein-forced thin—walled metal cylinders was made at the California Institute of Technology, and a .summary of the pertinent design information that was gathered during the course of the investigation is given in the present report. As a result of this investigation, parameters were evolved which make it possible to obtain an estimate of the stress at which general instability will occur for any given stiffened metal struc¬ture of circular cross section. It is considered that both the geometrical quantities and sectional properties of the structural members were varied over a sufficient range to establish, in general, the validity of the parameters. Because of the catastrophic nature of a general instability failure it is recommended that ample margins of safety be allowed in an airplane structure in which this type of failure might occur.
