The results of tests were combined with published data to determine the extent to which the knocking tendency of an air cooled engine cylinder is increased when the cylinder head is poorly cooled and when the cylinder temperature exceeds the maxi¬mum specified by the engine manufacturer. A single-cylinder engine equipped to provide separate control of the air passing over the cylinder head and the air passing over the cylinder barrel was tested with 100-octane fuel.
