Single crystal superalloys with high temperature strengths suitable for turbineblading are introduced. Special attention is given to nickel based alloys and their casting techniques. Development trends in the furnaces used in this casting are considered. The advantages, potential practical problems, and remedies are discussed. Quality assurance and wall section measurement though ultrasonics are also discussed. Single crystal inspection requirements and techniques, notably back reflection X-ray diffraction techniques, are outlined. Consequential problems from exploiting single crystal alloys in more demanding applications are discussed, and a case history showing how the new material was first used for the potentially higher stressed second stage blade in two stage turbines, is outlined. Future trends, including 3rd generation single crystal alloys which require the addition of yttrium to maintain environmental resistance, are considered.
