摘要

This plan represents NASA's response to the recommendations in the Interim Report of the Task Force on Women, Minorities, and the Handicapped in Science and Technology, which was published September 1988, and those in the report of the Task Force Subcommittee on Data Collection, which was published May 1989. NASA has over 160 educational initiatives which range from precollege through and beyond postgraduate levels, of which approximately 40 are specifically targeted for individuals under-represented in science and engineering. The plan highlights 68 initiatives (38 targeted and 30 mainstream) which will help prepare and increase the number of scientists and engineers from under-represented groups. Included are 17 (seven targeted and ten mainstream) new or refocused initiatives for FY 1990 and beyond. The plan reflects that NASA will ensure more participation of under-represented groups in our mainstream or regular programs, and in our workforce; continue and expand our work with teachers and students (teacher resource centers, teacher training, spacemobiles, and mobile laboratories); increase direct student support (enriched educational experiences, work assignments with scientists and engineers, fellowships, sholarships, stipends, and employment) at the precollege, undergraduate, and graduate levels; continue development and enrichment of curricula from elementary math and science, to space technology for secondary students, to advanced engineering design at the college level; increase research grants and relationships with universities that have substantial student populations from the under-represented groups; implement a volunteer program made up of NASA retirees; and continue dissemination of a wide variety of educational, audio/visual, and computer materials and information. Many of these programs will be linked together to form a continuum of experiences for the participants. Finally, NASA will continue to work with other Federal R&D agencies on methods to implement the recommendations of the task force as well as collect data in a consistent and standardized manner on the range of participants who receive research dollars.
