A method to determine the contact tractions and the surface displacements of two rubber-clad cylinders pressed together and rolling over each other is given. One of the layers may be absent, and paper may or may not be present between the cylinders. The conditions for contact formation between the bodies are discussed. An algorithm for determining the normally directed traction and the surface displacement at a given tangential traction is presented. The conditions for frictional behavior according to Coulomb-d'Amontons' law of dry friction are discussed. An algorithm for determining the tangentially directed traction and the surface displacement at a given normal traction is derived. The algorithms utilize influence numbers; these are the surface displacement components in a point x due to a traction element with centroid y. The method is implemented in the FORTRAN-77 program LAAGROL, which calculates a discretization of 30 points as well as a number of contact problems in 30 sec.
