Presented are the project and theoretical aspects related to a bit error rate estimator for digital telemetry satellite links. The estimation is based on pseudo-error counts obtained from the transmitted signals with modified decision thresholds. This method is attractive for the above application because previous knowledge of the transmitted information is not required, and the estimation may be performed on-line. Furthermore, the time required for the estimation is much smaller than the time needed for direct error counting (Monte Carlo) with the same precision.
