Creep mechanisms in the intermetallic phase (Fe,Ni)Al with ordered atomic distribution, suitable for high temperature applications, were investigated. The deformation tests show a brittle materials behavior at low temperatures, but a ductile behavior in the range of diffusion-controlled deformation. Two mechanisms are responsible for the creep of the intermetallic phase: deformation in the grain and grain boundary sliding. The creep behavior is determined by diffusion creep at low stresses, and by displacement creep at high stresses. Structural defects accelerate diffusion phenomena. At high temperature, the creep strength significantly decreases for deviations from the stochiometric composition. The investigated phases are comparable with the usual high temperature superalloys with respect to strength properties and corrosion resistance.
