Evaluation of inconsistent numerical observations made by different authors or laboratories on the same physical quantity is treated. It is argued that the weighted mean based on conventional weighting is heavily influenced by the value of the extremely small standard deviation stated by the experimenter. The method of Gray (1985) based on adjustment of relative information gives a value close to the unweighted mean, and a standard deviation which is smaller than for the unweighted case. The approach of limitation of statistical weights gives smaller values. The extended variance weighting and its improvement in the form of iterative weighting give results close to the results for the unweighted mean.
