Composition and Plasma Properties of the Plasma Sheet in the Earth's Magnetotail

Plasma sheet data from the ISEE-1 Ion Composition Experiment between 10 Re and 22 Re were analyzed to compare plasma density and temperature of H(+) and He(++) as a function of magnetospheric substorm activity and satellite position. The origin of the plasma sheet population is investigated; the contribution of the solar wind component and of the ionospheric component is discussed. The temperatures of H(+) and He(++) are well correlated. It is shown that high He(++) relative abundances are observed at high distances from the Earth, irrespective of the activity level. The plasma sheet H(+) temperature depends on the distance from the Earth: higher temperatures are detected at lower Re; the relative change of the H(+) temperature with Re is shown to depend on the average value of the activity index.
