Ground truth of a polder area (7000 ha) was established for the SIR-B radar (which failed due to technical problems). A 10 km long light track of an airborne L-band scatterometer located diagonally over the test area is analyzed, resulting in soil moisture, surface roughness, and vegetation data. Data for 15 fields are determined as field averages of areas of 25 ha and may be considered representative for the 75 ha large fields. Analysis of the spatial dependency of soil moisture content, and the statistical accuracy of its determination, shows that 9 samples, distributed in a regular grid, produce a sufficiently accurate mean value over the 25 ha on each field.
