A Markovian model for checkpointing and rollback recovery in a transactional system, in which checkpoints are performed after the processing of a specified number of transactions, is considered. Failures may occur during any of the different modes of operation of the system. The limiting state probabilities can be recursively expressed in terms of a finite set of boundary state probabilities. The set of boundary state probabilities can be determined by solving a set of linear equations. For heavily and lightly loaded situations, appropriate approximations yield explicit forms for the system availability and the mean response time of a transaction.
