A Structural Dynamics Model for Flexible Solar Arrays of the Communications Technology Satellite.

A mathematical model, which describes the structural mechanics of flexible solar arrays of the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) in a ground test configuration, was developed using variational principles and continuum mechanics methods. Modes and frequencies for an array with CTS parameters were calculated for the one-g test state, and compared to corresponding ones for the zero-g on-orbit state. Calculated results are compared with ground test data; good agreement is noted for the major structural frequencies and modes. The test results show that modal frequencies may be excited by subharmonic excitation; this feature would necessitate a nonlinear vibrational model, and is not accounted for in the mathematical model. Alternate mathematical models based on finite element and continuum mechanics methods, which were developed for the design phase of the CTS program, are discussed. (Author)
