The activation energies and the scattering cross sections are determined for barium, using an oxygen hypersonic crossed molecular beam apparatus. The equipment consists of two vacuum chambers for the oxygen jet, a scattering chamber containing an oven for the thermal metal vapor jet, and a revolvable quadrupole mass spectrometer. The reactions Ba + O2 yields BaO + O and also Sr + O2 yields SrO + O are studied as reactive scattering processes, in which the relative collision energy can be increased to 1 eV. The activation energy for the formation of BaO is lower than 0.09 eV and the reactive scattering cross section for colliding end products in electronic ground state is 0.7 sq A for a collision energy of 0.3 eV and 0.4 sq A for 0.92 eV (error of approximately 50 %). The dissociation energy of SrO in 4.8 eV, and the reactive cross section is a factor of 10 larger than Ba + O2.
