A discussion and assessment are presented of the important phenomena governing the infiltration and migration of petroleum products in the subsurface as gleaned from laboratory and field studies. The information is analyzed with a view towards incorporating these phenomena into a mathematical model. Such model would serve as a valuable planning and predictive tool by tracing future oil migration and simulating the effects of various remedial schemes. Discussed are the influences of gravity, capillary forces, solubility, and evaporation. Natural influences serving to retard the migration such as adsorption onto soil particles and biodegradation by soil microorganisms are also covered.
