Realities that affect any research and development strategy for the long term are reviewed. Issues raised by the aims of current research and development as it relates to the long term are identified. Further issues in connection with things that current strategy does not try to cover are identified also. Suggestions are made about current actions needed now to improve the chances of being ready to meet energy needs in the long term.
