This is a treatment manual for the cognitive-behavioral treatment of adolescentswho attempt suicide. The goal of this manual is to describe the population, therapeutic assumptions, and treatment plan employed by researchers at the Child and Adolescent Depression and Suicidal Disorders Clinic of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York. This manual is divided into 5 sections: (1) description of adolescent suicide attempters; (2) the assumptions underlying cognitive-behavioral therapy programs; (3) a specific session outline of the therapy program; (4) methods of dealing with patients with specific problematic interaction styles; and (5) instruments to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
