To facilitate U.S.-Japanese collaboration in manufacturing research, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) sponsored a meeting, to create a shared vision about the future development of technologies in the areas of product realization and intelligent manufacturing control, their capabilities, and their commercial relevance. It proposed a research program in product realization dealing with (1) organization and management issues, (2) framework for computational systems, (3) product representation and reasoning, (4) modeling and simulation of process and products, and (5) methods for rapid prototyping. The research program prepared for intelligent manufacturing control entails (1) advanced process machines and robots; (2) representation, organization, and management of sensory information; (3) manufacturing simulation; (4) combined sensing and action planning; (5) learning in the control of processes and systems; (6) human/machine interface enhancements; (7) system architecture; and (8) design of intelligent manufacturing systems.
