Four methodical approaches for the analysis of human-computer interaction arediscussed: field studies, interaction analyses, experiments, and checklist evaluations. Characteristics of the different methods are described. The appropriateness of the methods for research questions are discussed in the context of the project 'SAGA' studying the development and evaluation of adaptivity. The consequence of the hitherto existing experience is a plead for a combination of methods and against methodical rigour. (Copyright (c) GMD 1991).
