Experiments were conducted in non-reacting jets and jet flames with and without coaxial air and swirl. To quantify the molecular mixing leading to NOx formations, a unique imaging system was developed that visualizes the diffusion layers and quantifies the degree of molecular mixing within them. Three dimensional time-resolved images of the molecular mixing were obtained. To relate these types of local measurements to overall, global flame properties, total NOx emission index was measured while varying the degree of coaxial air, Reynolds number, strain rate, fuel type, and in some cases, swirl number. Flame blowout limits were measured for jets with coaxial air and for swirl flames. Theoretical analysis was applied to correlate and explain the flame blowout and liftoff results.
