Multiple sternum deflection measurement sensors have been incorporated into the thorax of the Hybrid III dummy. Eight string potentiometers are mounted to the sides of the thoracic spine box to monitor the inward compression and lateral movement of four points on the sternum area. The string potentiometers have been specially developed to respond in this dynamic environment. The standard deflection measurement device is maintained. Impactor tests and a series of five sled tests with different restraint systems have been performed with satisfactory performance of the multi-point deflection measurement system. The results of 3 point belt systems show that the sternum rotates inward with the upper corner having the greatest deflection and the opposite lower corner the lowest deflection.
