摘要

The infiltration process developed in the project is a novel method for combining two or more components to produce a ceramic composite material with mechanical properties superior to those of its individual phases. The processing approach can be used either to improve the surface of a material or to create a material in which the composite properties are varied throughout the component. The technique consists of introducing a liquid into a porous body and heating the composite material to produce decomposition and, in some cases, solid-state reaction of the infiltrated phase. Patent application for the infiltration process has been filed and the methodology has been made available for licensing.
