A derivative thermal analysis system and several computer programs are established and employed in the present quantitative studies of the combined effects of thermal factors and alloying on the solidification processes and properties of low alloy gray iron. Among the thermal factors demonstrated by the thermal analysis curves the cooling rate at 900 C has been shown to provide the best prediction of the final properties and microstructures under fixed composition. It makes it possible to use solidification simulation in property prediction. Some alloying effects of molybdenum, chromium and vanadium etc. are revealed, also taking the cooling rate into consideration. The combined effects of both the alloying and the cooling rate and some other metallurgical relations are approximated in several mathematical expressions which should be useful for the computer simulation of casting properties as well as for chemical composition design.
