摘要

The project was a study of large medical practice organizations in the United States (US) and the physicians employed by them. These organizations represent a rapidly expanding segment of the health care industry and employ a disproportionate number of younger physicians. The purpose of the research project was to examine the effect that different kinds of large medical practice organizations have on their physicians' role definitions, career expectations, professional development, leadership, job satisfaction, and clinical practice style. It also explored how these organizations are structured internally, what they have done to recruit and retain a high quality physician staff, and what kind of medical leadership they required to be successful. The primary objective of the study was to advance the authors understanding of how these organizations affect the long-term career orientations of young physicians and the content of their professional work, especially the provision of preventive medical services.
