Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are increasingly being used in the airport industry to manage environmental and sustainability issues. Typically, EMS are designed to ensure that an airport appropriately manages operations that have a potential for significant impact on the environment or are associated with regulatory requirements. This synthesis reports on the current practice of EMS development at airports in the United States and Canadawhy this is occurring, what practices look like, and how they were developed. The report provides guidance to airports with regard to the current state of the practice in the airport industry and answers questions that airport managers and personnel responsible for environmental management may have on what their peers are doing. It is written for an audience that may not have extensive familiarity with the technical details of EMS. The study provides background on the framework of an EMS, similarities and differences of various approaches, the development process, and lessons learned by 19 airports that have EMS experience. The airports surveyed include 12 that had an established EMS in place; four that were considering an EMS; one in the process of evaluating an EMS; and two that evaluated and decided not to implement an EMS. Three primary methods were used to gather the information synthesized in this report: a literature search, a telephone interview, and a follow-up electronic survey of 20 airports having experience with EMS. All 20 airports participated in the telephone interview and 19 responded to the electronic survey. Results were aggregated, but airports identified as having unique approaches were used to illustrate differences in approach on specific EMS issues. Two of these airports were then asked to participate in case studies, the results of which can be found located in text boxes next to the survey results to which they relate.
