STAD: A Simple Town Air Dispersion Model for Simulation of Photochemical Air-Pollution in Urban Areas

For an urban area the photochemical production of ozone and other secondary pollutants is calculated from the precursor emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) by means of a simple atmospheric dispersion model. Calculations are carried out for an 'average' city with ca. 300,000 inhabitants on an area of 10x10 sq km. On a rural scale, and even stronger on an urban scale, a distinct 'weekend' effect is observed for the ozone concentrations in the Netherlands: the averaged concentrations on Sundays are 7% higher for a rural situation and up to 23% higher for an urban situation when compared with the averaged concentrations on working days. The STAD-model, as described in the report, is able to reproduce the weekend effect.
