Experiments were conducted on the use of the conidia of the fungus, Beauveria bassiana, as a microbial control agent of the corn rootworm, a major pest of corn in the Midwest. Fungal conidia were incorporated into the soil at the time the corn was planted. The crop protection afforded by the B. bassiana conidia was determined by the amount of larval corn rootworm feeding and the corn yield. The survival and the distribution of the conidia in the soil were also monitored. B. bassiana conidia survived in the soil long enough to theoretically infect most of the larval corn rootworms and give good crop protection. The B. bassiana conidia were not homogeneously distributed throughout the soil regardless of the application method. There were no significant differences in the amount of rootworm damage between the B. bassiana-treated plots and the untreated plots. This was true for both the root damage ratings and the crop yield.
