The report describes the requirements that a traffic assignment model must satisfy in order to be used as a part of an in-vehicle guidance system. In such a system, the model would be used to develop optimal routes for each driver. Routing instructions would then be conveyed to the driver through the medium of an in-vehicle guidance system. Two generic traffic assignment models, the equilibrium and incremental models, are described and their application to the optimal routing problem is described. It is indicated that further research is needed in several areas if these models are to be used for a real-time routing system.
