The trend in underground mining is increasingly towards the use of bulk methods. The vein mining method currently employed between the 500 m and 600 m levels in the Ostra Dennewitz orebody of LKAB at Malmberget, Sweden is one such example. The report details the results of a mining rock mechanics program focused on the development of tools for guiding the design and execution of the method. Included are a compilation of the available rock mechanics information (including diamond drill hole data, geology reports, finite element studies, in-situ stress measurements, structural geology observations), a description of the mining experience from the first two stopes, an analysis of the results, and recommendations for the design and execution of the third room.
