摘要

An ultrasonic inspection device has been developed which can be used to identify defective butt fusion joints in polyethylene gas pipelines. Three gas utilities, Columbia Gas of Ohio, Consumers' Gas, and Wisconsin Gas, prepared samples of both good and bad butt fusion welds in TR418 polyethylene pipes. The portable inspection device was trained on data collected from a subset of the pipe samples. The intended joint conditions of these pipe samples were known prior to performing the data collection. In addition, a number of the pipe samples were destructively tested in order to determine the true joint condition. These data were used to develop an automatic classifier algorithm, which could accurately distinguish between good and bad joints based on characteristics of the ultrasonic waveform. With the classifier in place, GRC personnel then travelled to each utility and inspected the remaining weld samples. The results from these tests provide an assessment of the effectiveness of the portable inspection device for evaluating joint condition in TR418 pipes. Overall, the performance of the system was excellent, with 93.6% of the welds inspected being correctly identified as good or bad.
