The New York Task Force on Life and the Law issued the report to stimulate discussion and provide a framework for achieving a broad public consensus regarding life sustaining treatment. Topics covered in Part One include: The social, legal and ethical context for treatment decision; Choices and dilemmas; The right to make health care decisions: New York State law; The ethical dilemmas of foregoing treatment. Topics discussed in Part Two: The health care proxy: recommendations and proposed legislation; Making decisions in advance-the living will and health care proxy; The health care proxy: the agent's authority, obligations, and protection; Creating a health care proxy; The obligations of physicians and other health care professions; Health care proxies in the long-term care and mental health settings; Making the proxy work-the need for public education. Minority reports are also included.
