The use of high-yielding varities of wheat (HYWVs) has expanded sharply in developing countries in recent years. The report reviews the development of these varieties and provides information on the extent of their adoption. Where data are available adoption is measured in terms of area planted at the national level. Major emphasis is placed on short, fertilizer-responsive varieties, which are generally semidwarfs. They have usually been bred at one of the international agricultural research centers. As of the 1982-83 crop year, the total HYWV area in the noncommunist developing countries is estimated at 41.8 million ha, which represented about 60.9% of the total wheat area.
