摘要

The Long Island Rail Road successfully demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing automated technology to perform undercar cleaning on a commuter railroad car on Nov. 22, 1985. The demonstration was conducted by the Railroad's Industrial Engineering Department at the William B. Sheridan Repair shop. After the demonstration, a 3 dimensional computer model was developed to simulate the entire robotic system being considered for the Railroad's new Undercar Cleaning Facility. The demonstration consisted of one REIS V15 robot supplied by E.S.-I. Industries mounted on a 40' runway track. Six difficult-to-access M-1 car components were chosen to provide a representative test of the capabilities or limitations of the robot in the application. The actual cleaning process was performed using high-pressure air from a nozzle attached to the end of a robot arm. For purposes of the demonstration, the robot was manually repositioned along the track from point to point. The report is divided into 4 sections: (1) Schedule, installation and robot programming requirements, (2) Description of the demonstration, (3) The computerized simulation model developed for the proposed two-robotic production system, and (4) Findings, conclusions and concerns regarding the use of robotics for undercar cleaning operations.
