摘要

Acute gastroenteritis (AG) of infectious aetiology is a problem of public health significance worldwide. Although AG in industrialized countries is usually characterized by low mortality the direct and indirect costs can be considerable. Any initiative aimed at controlling AG in the population should be based on the clear figure of the extent of the problem. However, the burden of AG in the Italian population is usually underestimated mainly because the notification is poorly accomplished by physicians. This report describes the epidemiological situation of gastroenteritis in Europe and in Italy, the Italian infectious diseases surveillance systems that provide official gastroenteritis epidemiological data, and the diagnostic capacity of the laboratories for AG, in particular those that have joined the Italian Enter-Net. The report also provides insights on these aspects and discusses actions to be taken in order to improve the Surveillance System in Italy.
