Modeling of Shear Strength of Clay for Risk Analysis of Offshore Structures

The purpose of this research is to develop a probabilistic design procedure for offshore foundations. All sources of uncertainties that affect the undrained shear strength of clay are modeled and systematically analyzed. Chapter 2 describes the shear strength model, which can be used to estimate the unbiased shear strength and obtain its overall uncertainties. The model error due to discrepancy between laboratory and in situ shear strengths is evaluated based on the literature survey. In chapter 3, the updated shear strength model is described. The uncertainties of the shear strength model, described in chapter 2, are found to be too large. The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) performed the plate loading tests at Haga site, to investigate the reliability of the laboratory tests. A Bayesian approach is used to update the large uncertainties, using the results of the plate loading tests at the Haga site. Chapter 4 describes the reliability of offshore platforms. The probabilities of failure based on the undrained shear strengths, with and without updating, are computed and compared with each other.
