摘要

A Distribution Research Center (DRC) has been established by the Gas Research Institute (GRI) at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) to research problems in gas distribution associated with metal piping. The DRC's Task 3 project specifically addressed the influence of frost action mechanisms on cast iron main breakage and uplift of steel mains downstream from regulator stations. Included is a review of frost-action mechanisms; a survey of gas utility experiences with frost-action induced pipe displacements, pipe stresses and strains, and pipe failures; and the development of physical models to explain the observed phenomena. As a result of field experiments and findings of other researchers it has been concluded that the most likely cause of failures of cast iron mains axially embedded in undisturbed soil are thermally-induced axial stresses to which beam-bending stresses resulting from transverse loads are added. A first-order approximation model has been developed that describes the frost-action induced pipe stresses under such conditions.
