An image processing-based visibility model was applied to Los Angeles regional haze conditions, and methods were developed for testing the accuracy of this type of visibility modeling approach. An experimental program was executed in order to obtain a high quality set of the input data on aerosol properties and visual appearance required by the model. During the experiments, standard photographs were taken of chosen scenes on an extremely clean day and also under heavy smog conditions. The clean day image provides the substrate on which the visibility model calculations are performed. Pollutant properties measured on the heavy smog day are introduced into the model, and the results of the model calculations are displayed in the form of a synthetic photograph of the expected appearance of the heavy smog event. The synthetic smoggy image then is compared to a photograph taken of the actual smog event. This comparison is illustrated by using synthetic images that result from the model developed by Malm (1983). That model shows the contrast reduction characteristic of a smoggy day but still produces photographs that differ substantially from a real photograph of the actual heavy smog event. Careful evaluation of the actual and synthetic photographs can indicate the inadequacies of a chosen visibility model and can be used in the development of an improved model.
