摘要

Results are presented of a technology assessment study regarding the possible future implications of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) as applied to rice and maize production. A range of problems is considered which BNF might help to solve, including world hunger, declining farm incomes, expensive fertilizers, and cropland degradation. Six representative forms of BNF technology are examined: (1) autosufficient cereal; (2) symbiotic cereal; (3) leaky legume: soybean rotation; (4) leaky legume: forage intercrop; (5) azolla; and (6) BNF 'factory'. Several problems which may arise as a result of BNF development and use in U.S. maize and rice production are identified including adoption incentives, assurance of needed inputs, environmental protection, and genetic risk and yield variability. The need to determine exact production costs and exact levels of genetic risks and other potential hazards of BNF technology is emphasized.
