摘要

Sanitary landfills continue to be the most common means of disposing of municipal solid waste. The object of the report is to examine the available data relating to microorganisms in municipal solid waste and determine the potential impact of these microorganisms on persons who work in the solid waste industry or those who may be exposed indirectly through environmental pathways. The results of the study show that although microbial density associated with municipal solid waste may be high and include pathogens, no evidence could be substantiated that the collection, processing and disposal of these solid waste pose any current risk to workers or the general public. These observations coupled with knowledge of the infective dose/disease relationship of the human immune response system would indicate that exposure to such municipal solid waste represents a minimum, if not insignificant, risk of infectious disease.
