This text examines various methods of nonlinear structural analysis and design sensitivity analysis (DSA) for optimum design of structural systems. The problem for the static response case is investigated and several methods of DSA with nonlinear response are proposed, each of which requires a different numerical implementation scheme. A combined procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis is proposed. For the partial solution of large-scale structural eigenproblems, the substructural subspace iteration method with overrelaxation and shifting strategy is suggested. A conceptual design of general purpose structural optimization program is also recommended.
