摘要

The study presents the findings of a three-year longitudinal evaluation of the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) designed to measure the effects of FGP on those individuals serving as volunteers. FGP participants are older Americans who work with children with special or exceptional needs. They are low-income individuals, 60 years of age or older, who are no longer members of the workforce. In general, they serve 20 hours per week in a variety of settings such as mental retardation facilities, hospitals, schools, detention centers, day care centers and private homes. Benefits to volunteer include stipend, transportation, meals, an annual physical examination, and recognition of services. The major finding was that participation in the program maintained or improved the mental and physical health and social and economic resources of participants.
