The survey was designed to reflect the opinions of senior academic officials about the quality of undergraduates, graduate school applicants, and doctorate recipients in S/E fields over the last five years and the principal indicators on which their opinions were based. The survey also inquired about the shifts in the distribution of their most able students among S/E fields and between S/E and other fields; the most important reasons for the shifts in the distribution of their most able students and the three S/E fields that have had the greatest increase in the share of the most able students. In addition, respondents were asked to compare the quality of graduate school applicants holding baccalaureates from foreign institutions and those with baccalaureates from U.S. institutions.
