摘要

The present study presents a new way of evaluating descriptor-based indexing. A full appreciation of this method of evaluation as a methodology requires some consideration of the nature and function of such indexing. Fundamentally, indexing involves the application of a set of descriptor terms to a document. The descriptor terms are selected so as to represent the content of the document and are identified with the document, sometimes through code numbers which have the additional functions of classifying and arranging the document collection. Descriptors with document assignments are alphabetized to create an index (inverted file) to allow subsequent subject searching of the document collection.
