Biological Treatment of Cyanide in High-Strength Coke-Plant Wastewater

A primary objective of this research was to determine the extent to which a microbial population can be adapted to treat coke-plant wastewater which had not been subjected to steam stripping to reduce cyanide and ammonia concentrations. An additional objective was to determine the volume of nondistilled ammonia liquor (or the hydraulic retention time) which could be treated by an adapted microbial population. Another original objective of this research was to develop an assay method for measuring the activity of cyanide-degrading microorganisms in coke-plant mixed liquor. Additional objectives which developed during the course of this study were: to determine what level of cyanide could be biologically treated in coke-plant wastewater containing moderate and high organic loadings; and to determine the extent of adaptation of the nitrifying bacteria to cyanide.
