摘要

Exposure control techniques were identified at a site visit to Quaker State's Congo and Farmer's Valley Refinery (SIC-2911) in September, 1982. The Congo refinery was newer and used a hydrogenation process to upgrade lube oil stocks, while the Farmer's Valley refinery used furfural (98011) extraction and clay filtering processes to upgrade lube oil stocks. Employee exposures for routine operations were limited to collection procedures. Possible exposures during sampling were well below recommended limits for hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), ammonia (7664417), hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Open air construction provided large quantities of dilution air, while central control rooms isolated workers from potential exposures. Consequently, although both sites were below recommended exposure standards for methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), toluene (108883), and benzene (71432), concentrations were substantially lower at the Congo Refinery.
