摘要

Hydroponics is defined and its principal advantages, including high density maximum crop yield, minimal use of land area, and more efficient use of water and fertilizers, are discussed. The history of hydroponics is examined, and several reasons are presented to explain why it is difficult for hydroponic crops to compete with field crops: (1) Because the U.S. has a rapid and effective nationwide transportation system, local food production for individual regions or communities is unnecessary; and (2) There is a diversity of climate in the U.S., permitting conventional field production of lower cost vegetables throughout the year. The future of hydroponics is explored, and research needs are summarized, including: (1) development of lower-cost nighttime insulation devices and techniques; (2) disease control of water-borne pathogens in closed hydroponic systems; and (3) integrated pest management systems, to minimize pesticide use.
