A meeting addressing ethical issues in the management of occupational hazards is described. The background of the Ethics and Values in Science and Technology (EVIST) Program is examined and EVIST's support for research on occupational health is outlined. It is concluded that studies of the manifest and latent values operating in disputes over occupational health should be undertaken, that the ethical implications of practices and policies affecting occupational health and safety should receive greater emphasis, and that studies of the role of scientists and engineers in the development and implementation of occupational health policies and practices should be encouraged. Appendices provide the names of the participants at the meeting, describe EVIST projects on ethical issues in occupational health, and list the publications that have resulted from this work.
