A two-part study designed to examine messages about sexual violence being communicated to women through popular magazine fiction was studied. A systematic content analysis of approximately 1,850 stories from six confession-romance and family magazines read by women from various racial groups and social classes with the stories containing sexual themes being analyzed in depth was conducted. The second part of the study consisted of interviews with editors of the magazines and writers of the stories to explore how these stories are created and selected for publication. Understanding the messages about sexual violence in magazine fiction and how they are created is of vital importance since magazine fiction is a powerful medium in influencing societal attitudes about women.
